Frequently Asked Questions
Below are the most frequently asked questions that we receive regarding the filming process, DBS checks, our services and costs.
Are you DBS checked?
Yes, Andrew and all his camera people have up-to-date DBSs so are able to work around the school alone or accompanied, whatever works best.
How much does it cost?
In terms of costs, our three-day package (consultation, written treatment, three days filming, three days editing, colour grading and delivery) is our most popular and most recommended product which is priced at £4,500. This is the package used for most of the films on the website and allows us to take footage of a range of activities to really show off your school for a 3-5 minute interview or montage-based film. Our two-day package includes all of the above but is shot over two days instead of three, meaning there is slightly less scope in terms of the amount of footage we can capture and the film length is shortened to 2-4 minutes. The two-day package is priced at £3,500 but we do also have a more budget-friendly package which is a one-day shoot with a maximum of one interview (or none, as the following example demonstrates) that comes in at £2,000 for everything.
How long does the process take?
Timelines are all according to which package you’d like to go for - but the aim for the 3-day package is to have your film ready to go 2-3 weeks from the completion of shooting and the 2-day/1-day packages, 1-2 weeks.
What does the process involve?
After meeting to establish what exactly you’re looking for from the film, we’ll write up a 4-5 page document (treatment) which will include everything we’ve spoken about at the meeting and send it over for approval. It’s the bare bones of the film and gives a rough idea of what to expect from the filming days to help with scheduling. When you are happy everything’s in there you’re looking for, we organise some days to come in and shoot. We then take the footage and edit together a rough cut that we then send over for you to check and see if you need any changes. Once you’re completely happy, we finish the colour grading and fire off your brand new shiny film to you for use on your website, reception area, open days, or however you see fit.
Do you also offer photography?
Yes, photography is absolutely one of our services. For a customised quote, just let us know how many images you are looking for and we will send over a quote within the day.
What steps can be taken in preparation?
Preparation for the shoots is as painless as possible. All we ask is that the rooms are cleaned and ready for filming before we arrive and that teachers know who in their class can/can’t be filmed.
What about children that can’t be filmed?
This is something we encounter on almost every shoot. Schools should ensure children who can’t be filmed are known to the teachers in every class we are due to film and sat on one desk/area that we won’t need to point the camera at. Another option is to put bright stickers on those children who can’t be filmed at the start of the day — this is also useful in the edit if any have snuck through.
Can we keep the footage?
This is an additional add-on that we offer to schools. The footage is available at 10% of the total project cost. Schools must also provide their own hard drive.
Can we use our own footage?
Absolutely, if you wish to. We do recommend schools should take footage of large events (sports days, productions, etc.) if we are not there to film them. Just make sure the footage has been shot on landscape, not portrait, and this can actually add an extra layer of authenticity to films.
Who creates the timetable?
With full access to all the timetables and the teacher’s availability, we leave the scheduling to the experts (you). Please do try and schedule classes halfway through, or certainly some time after the start so we don’t waste time waiting for pupils to sit down, get ready, write down the lesson title, etc.
How long for each item?
Filming is not an exact science and flexibility is definitely the aim of the game on shoots. In order to capture something beautiful we normally need at least 10-15 mins for each item. Don’t forget to include time taken to walk around the school as well.
Preparation for Your Shoot
To ensure a smooth filming process, we ask that rooms are tidy and teachers are aware of students who cannot be filmed. This helps us capture the best footage without interruptions.
